Russia’s Investigative Committee (SK) has recognized more than 120,000 Donbass residents as victims of actions by Kiev forces, SK chairman Alexander Bastrykin said in an interview with the newspaper “Rossiyskaya Gazeta".

The SK has filed 1,752 cases over artillery strikes at the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics since 2014, Bastrykin said.

“More than 120,000 Donbass residents were recognized as injured parties in cases under investigation, he said adding that 665 persons were being prosecuted. "SK bodies have brought charges against 390 suspects; of those 178 people were charged face-to-face.”

There are 115 Ukrainian army commanders and senior military and defense officials among the suspects; of those, 132 have been arrested in absentia, the SK chairman said.

“The SK has completed the investigation into 138 criminal cases on the use by Ukrainian armed formations servicemen of banned means and methods of warfare and cruel treatment of civilians and prisoners-of-war,” Bastrykin said.

The Ukrainian government launched the so-called anti-terrorist operation against Donbass in April 2014.  The peace talks that began soon thereafter failed to reach tangible results due to Kiev’s position to settle the conflict by force.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation to protect Donbass residents from Ukrainian aggression. Prior to that, LPR and DPR Heads Leonid Pasechnik and Denis Pushilin asked the Russian leader to provide military assistance. The LPR militia and Russian armed forces fully liberated the LPR territory from Ukrainian armed formations on July 3.

The Lugansk People’s Republic acceded to Russia on September 30, 2022 following the unification referendum.*i*ie
