More than 10 residential houses have been hit in Ukraine's attack on Alchevsk on Saturday evening, the mayor Albert Apshev told Lugansk Media Centre.

Ukrainian armed formation shelled the town at 6:40 p.m. Saturday, 10 people were injured, including four children.

"In the area, this is a residential neighbourhood, a dozen of other multi-flat houses sustained damage, windows and roofs are damaged," Apshev said.

"An emergency HQ has been established, engineers, first responders, police are working, trying to contain the blazes, people are being evacuated," he added.

People whose properties were damaged will be provided with lodgings at a local educational facility.

Ukraine has been carrying out a military crackdown against Donbass since 2014. Multiple announcements of ceasefires failed to stabilize the situation. The simmering armed conflict escalated rapidly in February this year, and sent Donbass barrelling towards an unprecedented bloodshed.

Russia intervened on February 24 by launching a special military operation to demilitarize Ukraine and bring peace back to Donbass. *t
