LPR parliament to adopt new Constitution on December 30 - speaker

The Lugansk People’s Republic People’s Council (parliament) will adopt the new Constitution at the plenary session on December 30, LPR parliament speaker, Secretary of the regional branch of the all-Russia political party “United Russia” Denis Miroshnichenko said at a press conference in Lugansk.

 

“I repeatedly said that we’d adopt the Constitution by yearend,” Miroshnicheniko said. “We are not going back on our words: tomorrow (December 30), the adoption of the Constitution will be among the items on the agenda of the plenary session. So we can talk freely about it.”

 

The parliament speaker invited journalists to attend “this historical event” on Friday.

 

Earlier he said that LPR lawmakers were planning to adopt the new constitution by the end of the year in connection with the Republic’s accession to Russia. 

 

On May 11, 2014, the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics and several areas controlled by Kiev forces, held a referendum on LPR and DPR self-determination. Voter turnout in the Lugansk Region made up 81 percent and in the Donetsk Region 75 percent. LPR and DPR independence was supported by 96.2 percent and 89.7 percent of voters, respectively. The Republics proclaimed their state sovereignty on May 12, 2014. On May 18, 2014, the People’s Council adopted a provisional Fundamental Law (Constitution) of the Lugansk People’s Republic.  On May 15, 2020, LPR leader Leonid Pasechnik established by his decree LPR Constitution Day which is marked annually on May 18.
