LUGANSK, February 21 (Lugansk Media Centre) - Kiev forces violated the ceasefire 17 times over the past week, firing more than 200 rounds of ammunition at the Lugansk People’s Republic territory, LPR People’s Militia spokesman Yakov Osadchiy said at a press briefing at Lugansk Media Centre.
“Over the past week, Ukrainian armed formations violated the ceasefire 17 times expending more than 200 rounds of ammunition,” Osadchiy said. “Damage to civil infrastructure facilities was recorded.”
The Ukrainian army’s 59th Brigade servicemen fired 120mm and 82mm mortars and recoilless gun at the Logvinovo and Nizhneye Lozovoye village areas.
93rd Brigade servicemen shelled the Smeloye, Frunze, Golubovskoye, Sokoliki and Berezovskoye settlement areas with 122mm artillery, anti-tank guided missiles, 120mm and 82mm mortars and infantry fighting vehicle cannons.
“Ukrainian gunmen commtted the bloody act of aggression on the eve of the discussion by the UN Security Council of progress in the implementation of the Minsk Agreements, and ahead of the UN General Assembly meeting over the situation in Ukraine,” the LPR militia spokesman said.
“Nevertheless, war criminals partially implemented their treacherous plan and hurt LPR residents’ families. Damage was caused to 13 houses in strikes delivered from the positions of 72nd Brigade to cover a retreating sabotage and reconnaissance group; one LPR militiaman was killed and a Golubovskoye resident was seriously wounded,” Osadchiy said.
LPR air defence units shot down two Ukrainian drones over the past week.
Earlier, the LPR People’s Militia commander described in detail the Ukrainian provocation and identified the Ukrainian casualties.
The LPR militia said that a Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group had hit a minefield as it attempted to approach LPR militiamen’s positions in the Golubovskoye area. At least two Ukrainian servicemen were killed and another three were wounded.
Kiev forces then delivered a massive strike at LPR settlements in order to evacuate the killed and wounded commandoes.
Later on, LPR officers from the Joint Centre for Control and Coordination evacuated the body of a Ukrainian serviceman.
LPP representative to the Contact Group humanitarian subgroup, head of the LPR working group on prisoner exchange Olga Kobtseva said that the LPR had told Ukraine that it would meet its request to hand over the body of the serviceman.
On February 20, the Republic handed over to Ukraine the body and remains of other Ukrainian servicemen killed in Donbass.
The Lugansk People’s Republic Office at the Joint Centre for Control and Coordination (JCCC) reported that civil infrastructure facilities in the town of Kirovsk and the Donetskiy settlement had sustained multiple damage in shelling by Ukrainian forces. A civilian was wounded as Ukrainian forces shelled the Golubovskoye settlement.
The members of the Contact Group have announced ceasefire more than 20 times since the autumn of 2014. Kiev forces regularly violated the truce opening fire with large calibre artillery, mortars and tank guns which were to have been withdrawn in accordance with the Minsk agreements.
The Package of Measures for the Implementation of the Minsk Agreements was adopted by the Contact Group on Ukraine on February 12, 2015 and supported by member states of the Normandy Four (Germany, Russia, Ukraine and France). The UN Security Council approved the document by Resolution 2202 and called upon all the sides to ensure full implementation of the Package of Measures.
The document provides for comprehensive ceasefire, withdrawal of all heavy weapons from the contact line, starting a dialog on reconstruction of social and economic ties between Kiev and Donbass. It also envisages carrying out constitutional reform in Ukraine providing for decentralization and adopting permanent legislation on a special status of certain areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions.
