The coronavirus variants “Delta” and “Delta Plus” are circulating in the Lugansk People’s Republic, LPR chief sanitary officer Dmitry Dokashenko told Vesti Plus radio.

“As of now, several strains are circulating: they are “Delta and “Delta Plus”. We had no such strains last season,” Dokashenko said. “Delta” and “Delta Plus” are more contagious, i.e. one contact can infect a larger number of people.

“Even those who have recovered (from the coronavirus infection) in the last epidemic season have no immunity against these variants, hence the high covid rate,” the LPR chief sanitary officer said.

He said that the Sputnik V vaccine provided no immunity against these strains; however it enabled the immune system to respond earlier compared to unvaccinated system.

“The possibility of complications depends on the immune system response rate and viral load resistance; as of now we are mostly concerned about complications such as pneumonia. It is the most severe complication which regrettably results in covid-related deaths which are reported daily,” Dokashenko said.

The World Health Organization called the COVID-19 coronavirus infection a pandemic caused by a novel coronavirus. The first coronavirus infection cases were recorded in China in late 2019. The number of coronavirus contacts across the world has exceeded 240.2 million by now; of those, over 4.8 million people died, according to the World Health Organization. The LPR confirmed 16, 453 COVID-19 cases.

To prevent the spread of the coronavirus infection, the LPR authorities put the Republic on high alert and introduced lockdown measures. *i*s
